There has been a story that has been passed on about the death of Julius Berger who was popular for building the 3rd mainland bridge in Lagos.

The popular story was that Julius Berger was very prominent in building long bridges, structures and roads in different locations around the world. He then came to nigeria to build a bridge and as a result of a river his structures were collapsing, and he found it hard completing the bridge.

This carried on for months, and he was advised to go and seek for help from the deities. This was when it was revealed to him that the queen in the river asked for his life in return for the successful completion of his project.

However, this rumor was debunked.

So, Who Is Julius Berger?

Julius Berger the man we hard so much about is brand name, we think we know; but never knew him. Who built our bridges and edifices.
Above is picture of Julius Berger himself, the world renowned construction magnate whose
construction company – Julius Berger – built most of our bridges and many Nigerian edifices.

He was born in 1862 in Zempelburg, a small town in Germany. His father sent him to Berlin at the age of 12 to take up an apprenticeship with a leather wholesale firm. He returned to the family transport business three years later in 1878. He soon found himself more frequently transporting building materials instead of grain. It was this transportation of building materials that led to his becoming increasingly familiar with the construction industry.
When he had learned enough, he switched professions and started his own construction company named after him  Julius Berger.

The company is represented across Nigeria in structural engineering and infrastructure works, and in southern Nigeria through domestic and international oil and gas industry projects. It is known for constructing most of Nigeria’s infrastructure, major expressways, and even some residential buildings for the Chevron Nigeria headquarters in Lagos.

Julius Berger’s presence in Nigeria dates back to 1965 when the firm won a tender to construct a ₦31.2 million second mainland bridge In Lagos

he project was a significant civil engineering endeavor because it was the first in the country to be built with pre-stressed concrete The construction of the bridge was designed in phases with the first phase completed in 1969 and last phase completed in 1974 While working on the project, Berger undertook other projects in the country, a municipal water works project in Jos awarded by the government of Benue-Plateau State was the firm’s first construction project outside of Lagos State .

This project involved building a reservoir to conserve rain water and building a dam, water treatment plant and tanks. The firm’s efficiency in building the first phase of Eko bridge made it a top choice to repair the bridge over River Niger which had been damaged during the civil war.

This project kept the company busy in Nigeria.

Third Mainland Bridge is the longest of three bridges connecting Lagos Island to the mainland, the others are the Eko and Carter bridges It was the longest bridge in Africa until 1996 when the 6th October Bridge located in Cairo was completed.

The bridge starts from Oworonshoki which is linked to the Apapa-Oshodi expressway and Lagos-Ibadan expressway, and ends at the Adeniji Adele Interchange on Lagos Island.

There is also a link midway through the bridge that leads to Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba. The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC.

the bridge that leads to Herbert Macaulay Way, Yaba. The bridge was built by Julius Berger Nigeria PLC. The phase one of the project was commissioned by President Shehu Shagari in 1980 and completed by President Ibrahim Babangida in 1990; it measures about 11.8 km in length.

The True Story. Of How Julius Berger Died.

Like one of the old stories, the lies they told us while we were young, Nigeria played India in a football match and lost 99-1, and that the great Julius Berger died while appeasing a goddess of the aye river where he wanted to build a bridge, all lies.

in Lagos and later they erupted the magnificent 3rd Mainland bridge out of nowhere. Julius Berger himself died in 1942.

No, it’s not a mistake, it also interests me that he died ever before his company came to Nigeria and the man himself was never an engineer.

His Death, How He Died;

He died and was buried in “ito kin”, a small riverine town in epe area of Lagos State. The town seems to have an unexplored history and culture, and part of its mystery is the “aye river”. In 1996, a plane flying from port Harcourt to Lagos crashed in the aye river, the residents also made it known that nobody has ever successfully threw a stone across the river despite measuring only about 20 meters in length. Furthermore, they testified that any visitor that tries to swim across the river will not make it alive, only an indigene could swim across the river unharmed.

This and many more mysteries about the river was probably the reason for the conjured-rumoured story of how Julius Berger died.

What Actually Happened;

Mr. Ogunsanya, the son of the then-baale of the community disregarded the famous rumours regarding the death of Julius Berger.

He stated that back then, Berger married a lady from ito kin, and one day they had a quarrel, his wife allegedly called him infertile and for this reason Berger came looking for his father in-law to report the issue, unfortunately, he did not meet him at home so he went to Mr. Ogunsanya’s father to report the issue, as he was the baale as of then. Pa Ogunsanya said he crashed his vehicle into a big tree while leaving angrily, he died at the spot and was bury beside the tree at the center of the ito kin market which still remains till date.

Before his death, Julius Berger had patented his name with a German firm, and the company which still bears his name till date was awarded a contract to supervise and construct the Eko bridge in Lagos.

This is the true and undiluted story of Julius Berger
